The Studs Project is the final product of a project conducted by three students at Baltimore School for the Arts as part of an AP Language class. These students read three books of interviews by Studs Terkel, then selected four interviews from each book that appealed to them personally. The students built on Terkel's body of work by conducting contemporary interviews of their own which expand upon and provide new insight into the topics covered in Terkel's original pieces. On this site excerpted portions of the original interviews are available, as well the interviews recently conducted by the students. You can also listen to a snippet of the student's interviews, adding a rich auditory element to the written dialogues.
The goal of The Studs Project is twofold. First, it is to pay homage to Terkel's tomes, which are siginificant in that they tell the stories of those usually not remembered in our history books. Next, it is to further Terkel's mission by making his work accessible to a new generation by publishing it on an easy-to-use website; but also by continuing his legacy through new interviews and oral histories.
We are happy to present this project to you, and hope that you enjoy experiencing it as much as we enjoyed creating it!
